Project Description

Observatory Systems provided The Great Basin National Park Foundation with complete project management services for the conceptual design, detailed design, construction contractor selection, installation, operations development, and training for the Great Basin Observatory at Great Basin National Park over a 5-year period. The time from breaking ground to the first science observations was 5 weeks. The Great Basin Observatory saw first light on August 25, 2016 on the 100th Anniversary of the National Park System. The observatory is now under regular operations by Concordia University, University of Nevada Reno, West Nevada College, Southern Utah University, California State University San Bernardino, Redlands University, and other partners. The telescope is primarily used for partner research projects but portions of the telescope observing time are dedicated to public outreach, K-12 education, paid observing requests from industry, and private paid observations.
